Session 1 - Repair and Maintenance of old buildings

For an old building to be energy efficient, it needs to be in good repair. The first part of this course will help you to understand how old buildings work and some of the more common repair and maintenance issues to look out for. This course will give you the basic knowledge to look after your home, limit long term repair costs and teach you how and when to seek more specialist advice.

This course will cover:

  • - Materials and methods used in older buildings
  • - Lime and breathability
  • - Considerations when making repairs
  • - Common defects and their repair
  • - Project planning and delivery
  • - Maintenance check lists
  • - Case studies

 

Session 2 Energy Efficiency in older buildings

This introductory training equips you with insights into cost-effective measures designed to lower energy bills and minimize environmental impact, all while preserving the historical charm of your property.

During the session we will investigate thermal performance of traditional buildings and what factors can affect this, for example the condition of the building, moisture content, ventilation and building materials and methods.

We will discuss the simple changes that can be made quickly and easily to the more major interventions such as wall insulation. The pro’s and con’s of options will be discussed together with Laws and Regulations that may affect the choices that you make.
Gain the confidence to make informed decisions about retrofitting while respecting the unique architectural features that make your house a treasure.
