Stonemasonry and Mortars



Who should attend?

This course is suitable for people with some experience of building but would like to learn more about stonemasonry.

Course content: day 1

  • Building with stone - dry stone, mortared masonry, random rubble, dressed stone
  • Lime: non-hydraulic, natural hydraulic, clay
  • Lime: strengths, uses, limitations, manufacture, hybrid mixes
  • Hot mixed lime
  • Sand, aggregates and additives
  • Setting: carbonation, the lime cycle, environmental benefits
  • Mixing methods and guidelines

Course content: day 2

  • Building with stone - dressed local stone, random rubble, quoins
  • Additives: pozzolans, hair, mesh reinforcement
  • Hot mixes- demonstrations
  • Preparation - of site, working area, stone, aftercare
  • Tools - traditional and modern

Course content: day 3

  • Winter working with lime
  • Specifying mortars
  • Mortar analysis
  • Stone types and geology, availability, uses and limitations
  • Vernacular and regional styles
  • Consolidation, repairs and pointing
