As the drive to decarbonise the built environment accelerates, the need for appropriately skilled professionals has never been greater. Retrofitting older and traditionally constructed buildings requires specialist knowledge, and the Tywi Centre is proud to be delivering the NOCN Level 3 Award in Energy Efficiency Measures for Older and Traditional Buildings, aiming to help bridge this vital skills gap. This qualification is nationally recognised and designed to equip professionals with the expertise needed to make informed, sensitive, and effective retrofit decisions.
The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE), has commissioned this course which we will deliver in collaboration with Ingleton Wood, a multidisciplinary property and construction consultancy. Adding further depth to the Tywi Centre delivery team is Morwenna Slade from Ingleton Wood, who brings extensive experience from her previous role as Technical Lead for Retrofit and Adaptation of Traditional Buildings at Historic England.
A Blended Learning Experience
Spanning two weeks, the course combines online learning with hands-on, in-person training to ensure a comprehensive learning experience. Participants will engage in a series of webinars and participate in face-to-face sessions held in Bristol and Clevedon. These on-site sessions provide an invaluable opportunity to survey real buildings and explore the challenges and solutions involved in improving their energy performance without compromising heritage value.
Why have CSE commissioned the training?
Many buildings in the UK were constructed before 1919, using traditional materials and methods that differ significantly from modern construction. Inappropriate retrofit strategies can lead to unintended consequences such as damp, decay and loss of heritage significance. This course is tailored to help professionals understand the performance characteristics of traditional buildings and implement energy efficiency measures that are technically sound.
CSE supports communities across South West England to tackle the climate emergency and considers that this course is of real value in upskilling local building professionals, conservation specialists and building custodians in the region. The blended learning delivery model developed through the Tywi Centre – Ingleton Wood partnership ensures that the CSE target audience benefits from a high-quality and engaging learning experience.
