Exploring Treherbert and Meeting ‘Welcome to Our Woods’

April 2025

We had the absolute pleasure of visiting Treherbert recently to meet with the inspiring team at Welcome to Our Woods, and we came away feeling energised, hopeful, and genuinely excited about the work ahead. Set in the heart of the beautiful Rhondda Valley, Treherbert is home to a vibrant community development company, doing remarkable things—not only for the environment but also for people, skills, and heritage. During our visit, we had the chance to hear all about their many innovative projects and partnerships, and it’s clear that this is a place where creativity and care for the land go hand in hand.

We’re really looking forward to working with the team on training linked to the restoration of two important historic buildings in the town. Supporting this kind of heritage-led regeneration is right at the heart of what we do, and it’s fantastic to see it happening in such a proud and resilient Valleys community.

As well as talking about the heritage training, we were fascinated to learn more about the wider work of Welcome to Our Woods. Their connections with Black Mountains College and the delivery of land-based qualifications are incredibly inspiring. So too is their work with Precious Plastics, finding innovative ways to reuse and repurpose materials, and the exciting potential of their biochar work, which combines sustainability and science in such a creative way.

This visit reminded us just how powerful community-rooted action can be. We can’t wait to be part of this next chapter and to support the development of heritage skills in Treherbert alongside this brilliant team.
