The construction industry is evolving, and keeping your workforce skilled is essential. Whether you're addressing current needs or planning for the future, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) provides a range of initiatives to support employers. Among these, the Employer Network and specialised heritage training programs offered by the CITB Approved Training Organisation, the Tywi Centre stand out as invaluable resources for construction businesses. Read on for details of training and funding opportunities to help your business thrive.
CITB Employer Networks: Simplifying Access to Training and Funding
CITB’s Employer Networks are designed to make training and funding more accessible while minimising the administrative burden. This initiative has two main goals:
- Simplify Access to Training and Funding
Whether your business needs immediate trade skills, like masonry or carpentry, or future-focused training on topics like net zero, digital skills, or mentoring, Employer Networks can connect you with the resources you need. By organizing training and handling funding applications, these networks free you to focus on what matters most—your business.
- Strengthen Local Collaboration
Employer Networks bring together businesses to discuss regional training needs and advise on funding priorities. This ensures that local employers have a voice in shaping the future workforce.

Specialist Applied Skills Programme (SAP): Heritage Construction Skills Training
For employers in heritage construction, the Tywi Centre offers CITB's Specialist Applied Skills Programme (SAP) in masonry, plastering, and carpentry. These 18-month training courses are fully funded for eligible employers and lead to vocational qualifications (NVQ3).
Recognised as “sector apprenticeships” by trade associations, SAP programs are an excellent pathway for new entrants to gain specialised skills in heritage construction. Additional support, such as the ‘Travel to Train’ grant, is also available to cover costs like travel and accommodation.
