Dominic Wright - Carpenter - SAP Apprenticeship

In 2013, Dominic Wright enrolled on the SAP apprenticeship scheme at the Tywi Centre in to study Heritage Joinery and Carpentry.  He had just met his girlfriend and enrolling on the course meant he could leave his then job in Berkshire and move to be closer to her in Wales.

Dominic recommends enrolling in any heritage training scheme offered by the Tywi Centre to any tradesperson interested in becoming more skilled, better informed and more employable.

“The skills I learned whilst attending the course and working with the training providers helped broaden my skill-base and showed me that my life as a woodworker could be much more varied than it had been, and that there were possibilities to carry out skilled work, using traditional skills long since abandoned by most furniture and joinery workshops”

“The environmental benefits appealed to me too, knowing that a window for example, which had lasted 150 years, could with a few days’ work, and relatively little new timber (thus trees) be repaired, and then last another 150. Also maintaining the original features and the historic fabric of the building; the skilled work carried out by the original craftsmen remaining evident to anyone passing in the future to appreciate.”

“I met many other tradespeople on my course, who I now occasionally work with, for or employ - or whose work is a welcome feature on Instagram!”
