Qualification description
Participants will be provided with a Course Handbook which will cover the full content of the Units and provide supplementary information to support participants’ understanding of the broader issues affecting the energy efficiency and retrofit of pre-1919 traditional buildings.
Units covered in the training
- Recognising the Age, Nature and Characteristics of Older and Traditional Buildings
- Evaluating the options for introducing Energy Efficiency measures to older and traditional buildings
- Making Recommendations and providing advice
Summary of what is included in each unit:
Recognising the Age, Nature and Characteristics of Older and Traditional Building
- Building Age: Identify the age and style of a building to determine the best energy efficiency measures.
- Heritage Value: Understand a building’s historical and cultural importance and how it affects energy upgrades.
- Whole Building Approach: Consider all factors (location, condition, heritage) to ensure energy improvements are effective and safe.
- Conservation Principles: Apply conservation rules to maintain a building’s integrity while improving energy efficiency.
- Construction and Materials: Learn how older buildings are built and how they perform differently from modern ones.
- Heating and Ventilation: Understand different systems and how they impact energy efficiency and airtightness.
- Building Defects: Identify common issues in older buildings that could affect energy upgrades.
- Specialist Help: Know when to consult experts for complex issues in traditional buildings.
Evaluating the options for introducing EE measures to older and traditional buildings
Identify Energy Efficiency Measures
- Learn various energy-saving techniques for building structures and services.
- Understand suitable materials and methods for older buildings.
- Analyse how different measures work together.
Assess Building Condition
- Evaluate how building conditions and repairs influence energy efficiency choices.
- Adapt measures to fit existing building features.
Consider Occupant Behaviour
- Understand how occupants' actions affect energy use and moisture levels.
- Measure and assess these impacts.
Understand Legal Requirements
- Learn how energy efficiency measures impact protected buildings' appearance.
- Know relevant laws and regulations.
Manage Technical Risks
- Identify and mitigate technical risks of energy efficiency measures.
Energy Performance Certificates and U-values
- Understand and explain Energy Performance Certificates.
- Learn about U-values, their calculations, and impacts.
- Estimate costs and benefits of energy measures.
Evaluate Energy Efficiency Options
- Learn effective approaches and potential risks.
- Adapt measures to fit building structures and heritage values.
Make Recommendations and provide advice
Energy Efficiency Recommendations: Understand the building, reduce energy use, avoid waste, and use low-carbon energy. Engage with users and manage risks.
Performance Issues: Recognize that energy savings may fall short due to inaccurate data, poor installation, and changes in occupant behaviour.
Why Improve Efficiency: Improve comfort, reduce costs and carbon emissions, comply with regulations, and increase property value
Reviewing Information: Use surveys and reports to refine energy efficiency measures. Consider building repairs and occupant habits.
Prioritizing Actions: Start with simple, low-cost measures. Plan the order of improvements to avoid complications.
Legal Considerations: Know when you need legal permissions for building work and how to maintain the building for better energy performance.
Managing Risks: Identify and mitigate risks associated with energy efficiency in older buildings.
Understanding EPCs and U-Values: Learn how to use Energy Performance Certificates and calculate U-values accurately for better energy ratings.
Choosing the Right Measures: Focus on building fabric first, adapt plans to the building's needs, and avoid unintended negative effects.
