Meet the Tutor – Tom Duxbury- HERITAGE CARPENTRY
Tom Duxbury brings over 30 years of hands-on experience in the construction industry, specialising in heritage joinery and building conservation. From crafting oars and sculls in his early career to running his own joinery business and working as a Conservation Officer and Trainer, Tom’s knowledge is rooted in real-world experience.
Tom holds a First-Class Honours degree in Building Conservation and Management and is currently studying for a Master’s in Building Conservation. His background includes:
- Heritage Trainer & NVQ Assessor for Carmarthenshire County Council
- Former Conservation Officer for the Brecon Beacons National Park
- Lecturer at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David
- Traditional Skills advocate with SPAB, CIOB & Building Limes Forum membership
His passion for traditional craftsmanship and decades of on-site experience make him the ideal guide for anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of heritage carpentry and joinery.
Meet the Tutor – Joe Moriarty- HERITAGE PLASTERING
Joe started as a plasterer, working hands-on with traditional materials long before conservation became his focus. He’s worked on some of Wales and England’s most prestigious historic buildings, progressing from builder to project manager, and gaining an MSc in Sustainable Building Conservation along the way.
Now a Built Heritage Monitoring and Enforcement Officer, Joe protects listed buildings and historic sites—but his real passion is teaching. At the Tywi Centre, he brings lime plastering to life, showing not just how to work with lime, but why. His sessions are practical, insightful, and full of encouragement (and good humour).
Whether you’re new to lime or refining your skills, Joe will give you hands-on confidence and a deep understanding of heritage craft. With him, you’re not just learning lime plastering—you’re learning it from someone who truly lives and breathes heritage conservation.
Meet the Tutor: Oliver Coe- STONEMASONRY
Oliver Coe is a highly respected Master Mason and the founder of Coe Stone Ltd, a specialist conservation company based in West Wales. With over 30 years’ experience, Oliver has led restoration and stonework projects at some of the nation’s most treasured historic sites, including Llandaff Cathedral, Cardigan Castle, Dyffryn House, and the Priory Church of St Mary’s in Abergavenny. His work brings together traditional craftsmanship, such as hot lime mortars, carving and lettercutting, with a deep understanding of heritage conservation.
Alongside his practice, Oliver is passionate about passing on these skills. He works closely with the Tywi Centre, guiding NVQ3 learners through hands-on projects such as rebuilding historic estate walls at Dinefwr and The National Botanic Garden of Wales. Known for his friendly, approachable teaching style, Oliver creates a supportive learning environment where learners and employers alike can gain practical expertise and the confidence to take their craft to the next level.
